The Results of The 2009 North Carolina QSO Party
By Henry Heidtmann W2DZO

North Carolina is known for, among other things, great basketball, great beaches, and great BBQ. For NCQP’ers, however, it seems that the crazy weather of North Carolina is becoming part of its reputation. Forrest Gump may have said it best; “You just never know what you’re gonna get.”

This year’s weather was no different. Days before the NCQP, forecast begin to come out that had snow and ice spread from the mountains to the coastal areas. Meteorologists all over the state were calling for the storm of the year. While most of them got the severity of the storm right, it was the timing of the storms which perplexed those same weather folks. It was also that error in timing which changed the face of the 2009 North Carolina QSO party.  Many mobile operators and a couple portable operators planning to cover most of our counties called off their trips at the last minute. The weather was generally miserable all day from Murphy to Manteo, but the frozen precipitation held off until later in the afternoon for most of us.

North Carolinians love their lemonade- so we made lemonade with the “lemon” of weather. Bad weather and limited portable/mobile operations created a very unique party this year. We had 151 logs (up from 116 last year), the most ever in our hosting history. Our in state operators doubled from 17 to 41 with club operations reducing from 12 to 9. Perhaps everyone took advantage for a rainy day in anticipation of snow and played the game! Our mobiles were drastically reduced due to anticipated weather, jumping form 6 operations last year to only 2 this year (and were they busy.)  Our increase was up for out of state operators, almost doubling from 58 to 95 stations reporting in. Some of this may have to do with the increase of phone QSOs this year due to the limited numbers of mobile operations- Phone usage invited newer operators to find our contest, made obvious by the many first timers commenting in the soapbox. Many of the winners this year needed to farm both the CW and SSB portions of the band to be successful. I hope this trend continues- it was great to spin across 40 meters to hear no less than 20 operators calling CQ (and getting answers) and a couple stations explaining the contest to newcomers.

SINGLE OPERATOR

We have a repeat winner this year with Will AA4NC from Wake County taking top honors in the instate category. This is Will’s 3rd win in the recent history of the NCQP. He did it with consistent numbers across both modes of 80, 40 and 20 meters, tacking on a total of 96 multipliers.  Nate Moreschi N4YDU from Franklin County edged out last year’s 2nd place winner Barry Baker K4CZ from Durham county by only 3480 points. 2 Western Piedmont stations came in 3rd and 4th respectively with Jim Atkins W4UX from Forsyth County and Ed Swiderski KU4BP from Davidson jumping in to the fray. Dwayne Ayers N4MIO, one of the founders of the modern day NCQP in the early 90’s jumped into the fray and finished out in the top 5.

The Highest In State Multiplier plaque goes to long time NCQPer Tim Bennsion K4TZZ who managed to log 53 North Carolina counties, the most of all 41 operators. This marks Tim's third time as top multiplier number for the NCQP- nice work, Tim!

The out of state competition had a repeat winner as well. Jeff Hartley N8II gets the plaque for top single op (and highest mult total) from West Virginia for the third year in a row, working mostly 80 and 40 with 2:1 ratio of SSB to CW to beat out 2nd place finisher Gennady Moshkov from NY. Long time NCQP operator (heck, long time operator/contester/dxpeditioner) John Laney K4BAI from Georgia takes third place. The North/south propagation paths were very active this year with NY popping into the top 3.
Tom Warren K3TW from MD repeats his out of state QRP plaque win, nipping past winner Paul Kirley W8TM from OH. Mike Kirby W5JBV came in 3rd out of 8 entries.

INSTATE CLUB

Those boys from Orange county have done it again. The North Carolina KIlowatts NC4KW logged 100 multipliers and get a repeat win with a different callsign. The Carolina DX group W4DXA comes in second with over 500 QSOs and the Charlotte ARC W4CQ gets 3rd. From the looks of the results, it appears that a big difference in the top 3 stations was the use of 20 meter phone, with 199 for NC4KW, 46 for W4DXA and none for W4CQ. Lack of sunspots made  for a busy 20 meter band during the day.

MOBILE

Marty Young W4MY stuck out the weather and put in a tremendous effort logging close to 800 contacts before it was all over. He gets his second NCQP win with Harold Burt W9HB coming from IL again and giving out some much need counties. Our mobiles are always a big hit each year. We thank both Marty and Harold for doing what they could with the impending weather forecasts that weekend.
2 stations entered the out of state mobile category and this year’s winner (by 5 QSOs!) is Joseph Imburgia Jr. from VA with past NCQP winner Doug Smith W9WI taking 2nd place from TN.

Congratulations to Ben Wasilauskas K4GHS for taking the FARC member plaque this year with over 200 QSO’s from Yadkin county.

The Forsyth Amateur Radio Club would like to thank everyone who participated this year. We are always looking for ways to make the Party better. Please use the NCQP Yahoogroups reflector to talk about ideas, rule changes, etc. so everyone can be a part of the evolution of the event. We have always tried to make our event unique and welcome comments. One thing we mostly likely won’t be changing is the date- we have settled in on the weekend before the ARRL DX SSB Contest and though the weather sometimes is uncooperative we have had NCQP weekends where it was 70 and sunny all day.  It also works well with the CQ 160 contest. We are also always looking for category plaque sponsorships, so if you or you group is interested contact the NCQP.
As usual, we will deliver winners plaques to the Dayton Hamvention if you will be there. Contact us if you plan on attending. We will be at #3301 in the fleamarket so please stop by and say hello if you enjoy the NCQP. We’d love to hear your comments and stories. We might even take your picture for our newsletter. Certificates will go out soon. Have a great summer and thanks again for being an important part of the 2009 North Carolina QSO Party.
And now, on to the results!

SOAPBOX

The rain early in the contest made it tough to hear some of the stations on 40m.  The only mobile I heard was W4MY late on 80m. I guess the weather kept a lot of people at home.
Alan AA4FU

This was my second time in the NCQP.  Thanks for a great contest, I will definitely be back next year!
John AA5JG

My first QSO party - enjoyed it though the bands could have been better.
Jim AC4RF

Fun event.  Had to QRT for thunderstorm after 30 minutes.  Resumed 4 hours later.
Owen K1AF

Great fun!  Many thanks to all, especially the mobiles.
Charlie K8IJ

Thanks for a great contest!
Dan KB6NU

Band conditions were not as favorable for QRP compared to last year.  Many thanks to all for the QSOs.
Thomas K3TW

Weather prevented the mobile route I had planned.  Ended up with 7+ inches of snow here in Alleghany.  Wind got very bad later in the contest and was beginning to drift.  40 meters was very long this contest, where I worked the west coast easily.  75 meters was great this year due to the double bazooka up 35' in an inverted-V.  Worked nicely for locals.  Once again I had to rely on 10 meters for 5 of my counties. Probably a couple that weren’t activated for the contest. There are some great guys on 10 meters that rag chew every night. Thanks Guys for a successful contest!
Chris KI4SYR

Enjoyed the party! Had great fun chasing W4MY! Great mobile work. Join us for the KY party!
Raymond KJ4AOM

I tried my new auto tuner tonight and was rewarded with 2 qsos on 80 meters.
Joseph KJ8O

Great Party as always - Weather conditions here in NC made for rough going however. Low turnout of mobiles due to ice and snow but increased out of state participation made up for it. Thanks for all of the QSOs. Good to hear lots of old (and new) friends.
Will AA4NC / W4MR

Thanks to all who pulled my weak signals out of the static. I had a fun few hours.
Scott N1AIA

This was my first contest, running 80 watts into 5BTV vertical.
Ron N4PEG

Once again this year we decided to enter in the Club classification using our club call, NC4KW. Four operators were lined up so we were ready to fill the OpChair for the complete 10 hours.  Thanks to my wife Laurie (N1YXU), Dave (W4SAR) and Steve (KZ1X), and myself (N1LN) we had a team. Due to the single transmitter rule operations were quite limited, but we made the best of it using a rotational schedule instead of running Multi-2 which we prefer. This was to be Laurie's first shot at opening up a contest, which she did in grand style. Her rates on 20m ssb quickly started bouncing off the 120 - 130 per hour mark.  Not bad for a state QSO party.  However, that was not to last long.   After about 50 minutes of fun and high rates in came the heavy rain and with it came the HORRIBLE rain static.
We decided to work 1 hour shifts and swap from ssb for 1 hour and then to cw for 1 hour and change bands based on propagation and activity.  This seemed to work reasonably well for us.   I was second up and decided to try 20cw.  It turned out to be slow going, as you can tell from our 20 cw Q count, so I switched back and forth between 40 and 20.  We ended up using the middle height beam on 20 and the low beam on 40 as the rain static was much less with them.
The mid 20 is locked west due to a rotor issue, but it worked fine. We even resorted to using the rx beverages on 40 most of the time.  Sorry for the repeat requests as the beverages are very directional.  That is a good thing unless you are trying to hear from the west with the northeast beverage selected.
Dave was to follow in the third hour and was able to spend the entire time back on 20 ssb.  The band was OK - but not great by any means.  By the time I was back on cw, 20 was just about closed so I spent my time on 40. While on 40 (last time and this time) I did search for some mobiles but none were to be heard.  Well, none in NC anyway.  I did work a few mobiles around the country. Steve battled away on 40 ssb, with lots of static slowing him down, but again - great to have the beverages.  The rest of the 10 hours brought lots of band / mode changes - lots of operator changes and - finally - our first NC Mobile.  Thanks to Marty - W4MY/M for providing many needed mults on 80 cw.   His pileups were huge and we were pleased he could pull is through.  Call recognition is a wonderful thing.
When the 10:00pm EST / 03:00z time arrived, much to our surprise, we reached the original goal of averaging 60 Qs / hour and exceeding our mult total from last year.    We also earned 150 bonus points by working both W4NC and W4WS.
NOTE:   Last year we had two club teams running - one on each of our stations. The team that won - W4UNC - was the target score we wanted to exceed as we spent much more time last year trying to maximize that score and only used NC4KW to keep the idle operators busy until it was their turn in the W4UNC chair.
Thanks to everyone that spotted us - the rate meter told us every time. Thanks to John (N6MU) for our only 15 meter Qs.  Thanks to all the DX stations that called in, even though we only get to count the first country as a multiplier.  Last but not least, A BIG THANKS to the Forsyth Amateur Radio Club for sponsoring the NC QSO party.   The four of us had a fun time.
Bruce N1LN/NC4KW

Band conditions were good and and I had a good time. Thanks to all the stations that heard me.  Don VE3HUR

Enjoyed the QSO party! Thanks.

PART TIME EFFORT HERE. 80/40 WERE THE BANDS. TNX TO W4MY FOR MARTIN CTY. STILL NEED 8 MORE TO GET ALL NC COUNTIES. GOOD TURN OUT FROM NC. I JUST WISH I HAD MORE TIME TO SPEND. CU NEXT YEAR.

Tough conditions with a noisy band, signals way down from NC. Still I managed to top my last years score.

Well, even the best laid plans can be trumped by 'Mother Nature'.  I had hoped to activate the far west counties, but the weather precluded my getting down off of Glade Mt.  I thought about going down Saturday evening, but the weather forecast stated that I might not be able to drive the lower elevation planned route, so, I stayed on the top and just operated from my car in the driveway for
a couple of hours.  At 4400 feet, it started snowing about 10AM.  A couple of inches were down by contest start and the wind was gusting to 35 mph.  The snow static made 80 impossible, so this years log is only one page long.  Maybe next year :-))

Band conditions were pretty tough. Could not hear much on 20 (probably a little to close). 40 and 80 were best for me, but early March storms in the area made for some tough static crashes and high noise levels. Still managed to improve my score over 2006. Thanks to all the NC operators for their patience in having to repeat exchanges during the noise. Hope to see you next year.

I was in and out quite a few times. Not many Q's but had a great time.

I operated only a few hours giving out the Iowa multiplier. Great job by the mobiles especially W4MY who I worked in six counties.

The W4APP group was sorely disappointed in not being able to make the planned moblie run, but with a foot of snow falling in the NC High Country we feel we did the right thing in leaving the 5/9 Chevrolet parked in the driveway.  I worked the NCQP with my 80/160 dipole torn in half.  One side was still attached to the ladderline and the far end was still in the tree.  I hooked the other side of the ladderline to a barbed wire fence behind the tower and with the feedpoint about four feet off the ground worked 80 meters for almost 5 hours.  It wasn't much but at least I was on the air. Hopefully next year the 5/9 Chevrolet will be on route W4APP will be "on the road again".

Enjoyed the contest - will be back next year.

This was my first go at any contest, as I just got my HF rig since upgrading to General. I had a blast. I got to activate Alamance along with a few of my fellow Alamance cohorts.

(Welcome to the fun and congrats on the upgrade! – W2DZO)

Thanks to all for administering the NCQP. This was my first NC Party as a resident and I really had fun with it- although I only had a few hours to operate. But now I’ve got a score to beat for next year!

Fewer qso's than in the past two years; maybe because of fewer mobiles? Still it was enjoyable.  Thanks to everyone. Same old TS830s and Butternut HF6V vertical.  Log-EQF software.
